With Issue #9 Unnatural begins the last arc of the 12 issue series. It's been a wild ride and if nothing else this series is the model of consistency.
This issue picks up immediately following the cliffhanger of the proceeding issue with Leslie's personality merging with "The Albino", and Khal and Saya left trying to figure out a way to deal with the developing situation.
While this is happening we finally get details regarding the states reproductive program as well as glimpses into the origin of "The Glance" who turns out is Leslie's mother.
There are a lot of moving parts in this issue but none of it is overwhelming or hard to follow. Mirka should be commended for not falling into the trap of producing bottleneck issues. This series feels like it's on track for a satisfying conclusion and I can't see any filler content creeping in from here on out.
What I really like about these characters is that they all feel intelligent. All of their actions make sense in the context of the issue and the series. At one point Khal and Saya argue about the betrayal of the last issue and upon reflection both characters are sound in their logic. This is great writing here.
Even 9 issues deep I feel that if someone picked up this issue in a vacuum they could enjoy it as a single issue and would probably be safe going forward even if this is the only arc they got invested in.
The art for the issue is gorgeous as usual. I'm not sure if I can really consider myself a furry, but damn Leslie is hot in this issue. The constant chase keeps the action and energy of the issue moving and I always feel like something shocking is waiting on the next page. Its great especially when you consider so many titles get bogged down with pacing issues.
I also want to mention that the covers for this issue are extremely hot. I had a hard time finding a variant that didn't have Leslie's boobs or A$$ poking out this time around. I'm not complaining I just thought it was funny and worth mentioning.
I can't really find a complaint to throw at the issue. I won't say it's the best issue in the series, but it's better than most of the books I'm reading right now. Unnatural continues to be one of the most consistently good/great comics in my pull list and I'm going to be really disappointed when the series finally ends.
